During this period, the country experiences less rainfall and lower humidity compared to the rest of the year, making it a more comfortable time for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The weather is relatively pleasant, with temperatures ranging between 23°C and 31°C. The dry season is ideal for exploring Brunei's natural beauty, including visits to Ulu Temburong National Park, beaches, and other outdoor destinations. It is also a great time for hiking, river cruises, and wildlife watching. These months will also allow you to experience several festivals and events such as Chinese New Year (January or February, depending on the lunar calendar), Brunei National Day (February 23rd) and Hari Raya Aidilfitri (between late April and early June).

Snow Sports

Located in Southeast Asia and characterized by its tropical rainforest climate, Brunei does not experience any snowfall. As such, there are no opportunities for snow sports like skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating within the country. The climate in Brunei is hot and humid, with temperatures typically ranging between 24°C to 31°C all year round.

For those interested in snow sports, nearby regions in Asia such as Japan, South Korea, and China offer excellent opportunities. These countries have well-developed ski resorts and winter sports facilities.

Hiking and trekking

The best time for outdoor activities in Brunei is between January and May when the weather is fairly dry, but not too hot. June to August is the peak tourist season, but it is incredibly hot! Always be sure to carry sufficient water, wear appropriate gear, and check local weather forecasts before heading out. The rainy season is from September to December and it may not be possible to travel to some of the more isolated places.

Ulu Temburong National Park: Known as the "Green Jewel" of Brunei, this park is renowned for its pristine rainforest and biodiversity. The Canopy Walkway is a popular trail which offers stunning views of the rainforest from above. The trail involves climbing several ladders and walking on elevated platforms.
Bukit Shahbandar Forest Recreation Park: Located near Bandar Seri Begawan, this park features a series of nine hills and is a favourite spot for local hikers and nature enthusiasts. There are various trails of different lengths and difficulty levels, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers.
Tasek Lama Recreational Park: Situated close to the capital, this park is popular for its waterfalls, natural pools, and scenic trails. Multiple trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes. The park also features a fitness trail with exercise stations.

Jerudong Park Cycling Trail: This area offers scenic cycling paths suitable for all levels of cyclists, with the park providing a pleasant environment for a leisurely ride.
Muara-Tutong Highway: A long stretch of road connecting Muara to Tutong, popular among road cyclists for long-distance rides.
Bandar Seri Begawan Waterfront: The waterfront area in the capital offers a pleasant cycling route with views of the Brunei River and Kampong Ayer (Water Village).
Berakas Forest Reserve: This reserve has several trails suitable for mountain biking, offering a mix of terrain and beautiful natural scenery.

Best Beaches

With just over 160km of coastline, Brunei has everything from activity-based beaches like Muara Beach to untouched, peaceful beaches like Tungku Beach.

The best time to visit beaches in Brunei is between January and May when the weather is fairly dry, but not too hot. Although June to August is the peak tourist season, it is incredibly hot! The rainy season is from September to December.

Muara Beach: Known for its long stretch of white sand, clear waters, and family-friendly atmosphere. The beach has picnic areas, barbecue pits, and a children's playground. Good for: Swimming, picnicking, and beach sports.
Serasa Beach: Popular for water sports and activities. The beach is home to the Serasa Water Sports Complex, which offers jet skiing, windsurfing, and kayaking. Good for: Water sports, picnicking, and fishing.

Surfing

Brunei is not widely known for surfing, as it lacks the large, consistent waves typically sought by surfers. The country’s coastline, located on the northern coast of Borneo, faces the South China Sea, which generally does not produce significant surfable waves compared to other well-known surfing destinations in Southeast Asia. Surf spots can be found at Tungku Beach, Tanjung Batu & Berakas Coastal Park. The best time of year for surfing in Brunei is during the summer months of June to August and sometimes into September.

However, Brunei does offer other water sports activities such as kayaking, jet skiing, and windsurfing. If you're particularly interested in surfing, you might consider travelling to nearby countries that are famous for their surf spots such as Indonesia, Malaysia or the Philippines.

Wind Sport

Brunei's coastal conditions and climate are generally not ideal for kitesurfing due to the relatively calm waters and lack of strong, consistent winds typically required. Although not a particular kitesurfing destination, you may find good conditions for kiting in Brunei during the Northeast Monsoon season, from December to March. Potential kitesurfing spots are at Serasa Beach, Muara Beach, Berakas and Merangang.
