It was a no-wind day in Mauritius and in the video below we hit the road for a day of sightseeing! We got caught in a bit of rain and had to abandon some of our snorkelling plans, but it was still a great day out and we got to see some stunning beaches along the Southern coast of Mauritius!
Where to stay in the South of Mauritius
We were based in La Gaulette for most of our stay as our main focus was kite surfing at Le Morne Brabant. From here we circumnavigated the entire island with our fantastic little rental car.

Our 1 Day Road Trip Route of Southern Mauritius from La Gaulette:
Our first stop was just past the small village of Le Morne Brabant where we happened upon the incredibly beautiful La Prairie Beach. When the wind is right this can be a great spot for kite-surfing! The water is shallow and crystal clear and it's a popular hang-out for locals over weekends.
The plan was to stop at Riambel Beach for a quick snorkel session as we've heard the reef makes it a fantastic spot to see some good sea life. The unpredictable weather had other plans for us though as it pretty much started raining as soon as we got in the water!
We opted to rather drive on to the Gris Gris viewpoint just past Souillac where we found a vendor selling a variety of tempting goodies. We tried the Croquette Fromage and a Roti Poulet - perfect comfort food when it rains.
Heading inland we hoped to avoid more rain but it only got worse once we got to Grand Basin so we had to return another day to explore the expansive Hindu complex.
Once we exited the National Park weather improved enough for us to stop at the Macondé viewpoint overlooking La Gaulette and Tamarin Bay. The disadvantage of a tropical island is that your best-laid plans can be ruined at any time by the unpredictable weather. In this case, the day was not exactly what we had planned but we still managed to have some fun. You simply have to watch the video to see just how beautiful this southern coast of Mauritius really is!
